The 2021 Alfa Romeo Tonale is a concept hybrid compact utility vehicle designed to deliver new and intense emotions. The all-new 2021 Alfa Romeo Tonale injects a bit of Italian blood into the shortage of subcompact luxury crossovers. Rounded bodies accentuated by Alfa’s sharp nose, the Tonale is as handy as they come. In addition, it should offer a plug-in-hybrid drivetrain with a short-range electric drive. Although this and many other aspects of the small SUV are still unknown, the company has promised to continue Alfa’s tradition of driving pleasure. Include the high seating height and all-wheel-drive option that consumers crave, as well as the potential for the powerful Quadrifoglio model – and the 2021 Tonale will be the new model.
The all-new 2021 Tonale debuted in concept form at the Geneva Motor Show in 2019, and we recently saw its leaked images in production form as well. While we’re waiting for official details on the version to be found in American showrooms, we know it will be placed under the Alfa Romeo Stelvio off-road vehicle and compete with subcompact alternatives such as the BMW X1 and Volvo XC40.
2021 Alfa Romeo Tonale Interior
Looking alongside some whimsical interior parts of the concept, such as transparent backlit panels, It’s expected many design elements and technological features to break into the production model. The circular air vents and driver-centered control panel have obviously been developed from current Alfa models. The dash of the concept also had a 12.3-inch digital cluster, and its three-spoke steering wheel put a modern twist into the classic design. Adopting a front-wheel-drive could help with internal packaging compared to rear-wheel-drive Alfas. However, this space could be compromised by the battery and electric motor that define plug-in hybrids.
The 2021 Alfa Romeo Tonale concept boasted a 10.3-inch touch-sensitive infotainment system with unique content called “Alfista” and “Paddock” that should delight Alfa Romeo fanatics. The first allows people to connect with Alfa clubs and community events, and the second offers a virtual marketplace for buying Alfa brand performance parts and merchandise. We expect other traditional content such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an optional premium audio system.
2021 Alfa Romeo Tonale Engine
While all the details are still pending, we expect the final production version to be based on a front-wheel-drive platform that deviates from the company’s current rear-wheel-drive architecture. Of course, an all-wheel-drive system will undoubtedly be available to meet consumer requirements. The plug-in hybrid model will have a rear electric motor to aid the internal combustion engine at the front-most likely a four-cylinder with a turbocharger. Despite the mechanical approaches presented at Tonale, Alfa promises to preserve the driver’s engagement and performance characteristics that are legendary features of the brand. Until we learn more about what’s under the Tonale’s bonnet, we can’t test the fuel economy of the crossover with an EPA rating. If rumors of a plug-in-hybrid version linked to the Jeep Compass and Renegade PHEV are true, it could have an electric range of about 31 miles.
2021 Alfa Romeo Tonale Safety
Tonale has not been tested for collisions by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Road Safety Insurance Institute (IIHS). Alfa has not announced what driver assistance equipment will be offered, but we expect the list to include modern features such as automatic emergency braking and 2021 Alfa Romeo Tonale adaptive cruise control.
